Should You Follow the Paleo Diet to Help You Lose Weight?

The Paleo diet isn't really a new diet program, as it's been around for several years now. Whether or not it is truly a fad diet is still being debated. The idea of it seems legitimate but the practices seem kind of funky, not to mention every year it seems to pop up in some new incarnation. This is because so-called experts of this diet constantly are adjusting the diet so that it accommodates whatever health and weight loss fads are hot at the time. But the diet remains true to its core. According to its inventors, the Paleo diet mimics what the early humans ate supposedly. Here are some facts about the Paleo diet to help you figure out whether it is right for your weight loss needs. It was Walter L. Voegtlin, a gastroenterologist, who is credited as having invented the Paleo diet. In 1975, Voegtlin published a book called The Stone Age Diet. In his book, he stated that humans are carnivores. He said that eating a diet rich in meat dates all the way back to the Paleolithic era which is when agriculture first started to show up. He said it was primarily protein and fat with carbohydrates taking a small back seat. He based his findings on his own medical treatment of different dietary ailments like Crohn's Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, etc. You should know, however, that Voegtlin is not an archaeologist or a historian.

No diet will really be effective unless you exercise.

This applies if you decide to get on the Paleo diet. However, you might find it hard to exercise all the time on the Paleo diet. This is because you only get a small percentage of your food through carbohydrates, the foods that are responsible for giving us energy and helping our bodies stay healthy while we exercise and work out. Luckily the diet isn't completely carbohydrate free. Still, you might want to adjust the ratio if you hope to really burn calories through the exercise that you need to do to stay healthy.

Another feature of the Paleo diet is that it doesn't involve the consumption of wheat and wheat products. Yes, it's a gluten free diet. Not eating wheat and wheat products is actually a dietary choice that a lot of people make even when they're not doing the Paleo diet. A gluten free diet is chosen by many people often because they have wheat allergies. Some people do it in order to boost their energy levels.
